Why Rohit Sharma isn’t fielding in IPL 2025 has become a hot topic among fans and analysts, as the seasoned Mumbai Indians (MI) star has notably stayed off the field during multiple matches this season. Known for his all-around presence on the field over the years, Rohit Sharma has been participating solely as a batter in IPL 2025, raising eyebrows about his current role in the team. Addressing the growing speculation, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene recently provided clarity on the situation, explaining the reasoning behind Rohit’s limited on-field involvement.

Speaking to the media, Jayawardene clarified that Rohit Sharma has been playing as an “impact player” in several games due to a lingering niggle from the Champions Trophy. To manage his fitness and ensure his availability for crucial games, the franchise has opted to restrict his fielding duties. According to the coach, it’s a strategic decision made with player workload management in mind.

“Rohit was carrying a minor injury, and we didn’t want to risk it worsening,” Jayawardene said. “Our main goal is to keep him fresh and ready, especially for the backend of the tournament. With the impact player rule in place, we’ve used that flexibility to our advantage.”

The impact player rule, which came into force recently, enables the team to make a substitution during a game based on strategic reasons. This has benefited MI to play Rohit only for batting purposes while keeping the fielding side agile and active. Jayawardene went on to mention that the combination of the team needed more players who were double-skilled in terms of their fielding capabilities as well as bowling abilities.

In spite of restricted time on the ground, Rohit has been in excellent nick with the bat. Up to now in IPL 2025, he has scored almost 300 runs, including a few half-centuries, to demonstrate that the adjusted role has not impacted his batting performance on the field.

Interestingly, this was not originally in the plan. Jayawardene acknowledged that the choice to employ Rohit as a part-time player evolved during the tournament as they gauged his physical state and the tactical needs of the team.

Fans have voiced mixed reactions to this approach, with some expressing concern about not seeing Rohit take his usual fielding positions, while others have praised the management for prioritizing player health. Regardless of the debate, the strategy appears to be paying off as MI remains in contention for a playoff spot.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Rohit Sharma resumes full match duties or continues in his specialized role. For now, MI is backing its approach, and Rohit seems content focusing on making an impact with the bat when it matters most.
