RCB owners planning to sell IPL franchise

RCB owners planning to sell IPL franchise just days after their historic title win in 2025 has stunned the cricket world. According to reports, it seems that Diageo Plc, the big player behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), is looking into the possibility of stepping away from the team, whether that’s a full exit or just a partial one.

Diageo appears keen to capitalise on the franchise’s recent triumph. After a long wait of 18 years, the brand has finally clinched its first Indian Premier League (IPL) title. Riding the wave of victory, the company is in talks with investors and aims to value the franchise at nearly $2 billion. This figure highlights the IPL’s growing commercial power.

United Spirits Ltd, under Diageo’s ownership, currently manages RCB’s operations in India. Discussions are underway with advisors who may help manage the potential deal. While there’s no official confirmation yet, the news has already impacted the markets. Shares of United Spirits jumped 3.3% following the reports.

However, the celebrations were overshadowed by tragedy at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. A crowd surge led to the unfortunate death of 11 fans. The tragedy cast a shadow over what should have been a moment of pure celebration.

Earlier, Diageo acquired RCB from its original owner, Vijay Mallya. Mallya, once a high-profile Indian businessman, lost his empire to mounting debts. Diageo stepped in and took over RCB through United Spirits. Since then, the brand has remained among the most talked-about franchises in the league.

Still, despite a few IPL titles, RCB boasts one of cricket’s largest fan bases. Its social media following rivals that of top global sports teams. Players like Virat Kohli, along with recent match-winners, have kept fans loyal over the years.

At this point, Diageo has not yet reached a final decision. The sale could involve a partial stake or the entire franchise. One thing remains certain: RCB’s brand value is at an all-time high.

The coming weeks may bring clarity. Whether the current owners stay or go, RCB’s legacy in the IPL continues to grow stronger. Fans hope the momentum of 2025 carries forward, on and off the field.
