Mitchell Johnson criticizes Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood’s WTC Final performance has sparked major criticism after Australia’s defeat to South Africa at Lord’s. The Aussie pacer managed only two wickets in a match that ended in just four days. Mitchell Johnson criticizes Josh Hazlewood for prioritizing the IPL over national duty, especially ahead of the high-stakes WTC Final.

Originally, Hazlewood was not expected to play in the IPL due to injury concerns and the upcoming Test final. However, the IPL got delayed because of tensions between India and Pakistan. This allowed Hazlewood to return for the last few matches with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mitchell Johnson believes this late IPL comeback affected Hazlewood’s Test readiness, and his poor performance in the final reflected that.

In his column for The West Australian, Mitchell Johnson expressed his disappointment. He wrote, “Hazlewood’s IPL return over national duty raised eyebrows.” He added, “We have seen fitness concerns around Hazlewood for years. Prioritising IPL over Test cricket sends the wrong message.”

Furthermore, Mitchell Johnson questioned Australia’s senior bowling lineup. He said the “big four”, Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Nathan Lyon, should no longer have guaranteed spots. He urged selectors to bring in fresh talent. Players like Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis, and 36-year-old Scott Boland are, according to him, ready to prove themselves. “They have the right mindset. They’re hungry to perform for the country every time,” said Johnson.

Moreover, Johnson pointed to the upcoming Test series against the West Indies as a perfect opportunity to rebuild. Australia must embrace new talent and give them chances now. This is essential for building a stronger, more competitive team for the future. With Steve Smith recovering from a finger injury, selectors can explore fresh options. Johnson cautioned against changing the top three batting positions all at once. However, he stressed the need for a dependable No. 3 batsman. He also noted that Labuschagne’s recent form doesn’t support big changes just yet.

Mitchell Johnson’s criticism of Josh Hazlewood reignites the debate between franchise cricket and national duty. While Hazlewood’s IPL run ended in a trophy, his poor WTC Final showing raised deeper concerns. Johnson believes Australia must now invest in players who put country before league and stay committed on the international stage.
