India is gearing up for a crucial five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20, 2025. However, one big question remains: who will lead the team as the India Test captain in 2025? With Rohit Sharma stepping away from Test cricket, the BCCI must now appoint a new leader. Initially, they considered Jasprit Bumrah a strong contender, but recent reports confirm he is no longer in the race.

India Test captain in 2025

To begin with, Bumrah had leadership experience and a strong presence on the field. Yet, the BCCI is hesitant to give the captaincy to a fast bowler. The main concern is his workload and injury risk. Moreover, managing Bumrah’s fitness is critical. The BCCI wants him fresh for high-pressure matches and major tournaments. Since fast bowling is physically demanding, especially in Tests, the selectors prefer a less physically burdened player as captain.

As a result, the BCCI has turned its attention to two top-order batters, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. Both are young, talented, and central to India’s plans.

Shubman Gill’s name is gaining serious traction. At just 25, he has already shown leadership potential. Notably, he captained the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. His calm mindset and maturity at the crease make him a natural leader. However, some former selectors believe he may need more time. According to them, international captaincy requires added experience and emotional maturity.

On the other hand, Rishabh Pant offers a very different style of leadership. Known for his aggressive batting and infectious energy, Pant has led the Delhi Capitals and even captained India in limited-overs games.

Importantly, he has proven himself in overseas Tests. His match-winning knocks in Australia and consistent performances in England boost his case. In addition, Pant’s recent return from injury has sparked interest in his captaincy potential once again. His fearless attitude and ability to uplift the team could make him the ideal choice for this transitional phase.

With only a few weeks left before the series begins, the BCCI is expected to announce a decision soon. Insiders suggest the board is carefully reviewing each candidate’s temperament, leadership skills, and team chemistry. Although both players offer different strengths, the final pick will reflect BCCI’s long-term vision not just for this series, but for the future of Indian Test cricket.

It is a crossroads for the India Test captain’s leadership in the current 2025 year. With Rohit Sharma out and Bumrah stepping aside, the team needs a fresh face at the helm. Whether it’s the poised Shubman Gill or the electric Rishabh Pant, the next captain will shoulder great responsibility. The England tour won’t just test India’s bench strength, it will likely usher in a new era of leadership.
