During his tenure, Stead guided the Black Caps to remarkable global achievements. Notably, the team won the World Test Championship (WTC), reached the finals of three major ICC events, and even completed a historic 3-0 Test series whitewash in India, a feat no other team has managed on Indian soil.

Reflecting on his journey, he said, “The last seven years have been filled with incredible memories. I’ve worked with players who gave everything to represent New Zealand. It’s been an absolute privilege to be part of their journey.” At 53, he had already stepped back from white-ball coaching. However, with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) planning to appoint a single coach across all formats, his complete exit became inevitable as his contract approached its end.

Looking to the future, he added, “Coaching is still in my blood. I’ll take a short break, but I’m excited to explore new chances, whether at home or overseas.”

Stead assumed the role in 2018, succeeding Mike Hesson. From the outset, he focused on building a team grounded in resilience, humility, and consistency. For instance, in 2019, New Zealand came painfully close to clinching the ODI World Cup title, only to lose to England in a final decided by boundary count. Then in 2021, the team bounced back impressively, defeating India to secure their first global title in 21 years at the WTC final in Southampton. He reflected, “It’s been an honour to witness their growth from the front row.”

In conclusion, Gary Stead’s resignation marks the end of a golden chapter in New Zealand cricket. Under his leadership, the team embraced belief, unity, and a strong fighting spirit. As they move forward, the Black Caps do so on a solid foundation of discipline, respect, and global recognition, all key elements of Stead’s enduring legacy.
