Mike Hesson took charge as Pakistan’s white-ball rebuild coach and introduced a clear, modern vision for the team. He aims to develop players with multiple skills, improve fielding standards, and build a culture where team success matters more than personal milestones.

In his first series, Pakistan beat Bangladesh 3-0. The team used up to eight bowlers in one game. This shows Hesson’s key strategy. “If you’ve got 6, 7, 8 options, the captain has choices,” he said. He values bowlers who adapt to matchups. He also sees part-time bowlers as important. Hesson said, “The idea of just specialist batters is very much outdated.” He wants players who can bat and bowl. “You’ve got to be above par with the bat and below par with the ball,” he added.
Hesson stresses better fielding. “Fielding is critical in white-ball cricket,” he said. “There’s no room for someone who can’t field.” He wants to raise standards like Mickey Arthur did. Back then, Pakistan became a top fielding side. “You’ve got to understand what the team culture is and then improve it,” Hesson said. He pushes a team-first mindset. “If we need 14 in an over, a single won’t help,” he further commented. “Trying to bunt for a milestone means nothing if we lose by 20.”
Hesson accepted the role knowing the challenges involved. Before signing, he sought assurances from the PCB for time to deliver results. He focuses on medium-term progress and believes success requires a clear plan and patience. He also emphasized the need for unity among selectors, players, and management to align on goals and expectations.
Several top players, including Babar Azam, Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, were not included in Hesson’s first squad. Despite this, Hesson remains open to all players returning, provided they meet the team’s standards and understand the commitment needed to succeed.
The Pakistan white-ball rebuild has begun. Mike Hesson has set the stage for a smarter, more team-oriented side. His emphasis on versatility and elite fielding marks a real shift. The journey moves forward driven by focus, purpose, and clarity.
