Who is Urvil Patel?

Urvil Patel has come to the fore so abruptly in Indian cricket, especially after dominating the headlines for his fiery performances in domestic T20 cricket. Hailing from Mehsana in Gujarat, this 26-year-old wicket-keeper batsman stunned followers and selectors alike with his astonishing power-hitting ability.

In November 2024, Urvil made his entry by scoring a hundred off 28 balls during a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy game against Tripura. This century-breaking knock, seasoned with 12 sixes and 7 fours, became a new standard for the quickest Indian T20 century. And he didn’t rest on his laurels; he followed that with another ton in only 36 deliveries against Uttarakhand, becoming the first Indian to have two sub-40-ball tons in the same tournament.

Although he once played domestic cricket for Baroda and now plays for Gujarat, Urvil’s performances have been consistently significant. In T20 cricket, he has scored more than 1,100 runs at a strike rate of more than 170, a clear indication of his style of play being aggressive at the crease. His dominance does not simply stop with the shortest game; he also scored a 41-ball century in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match, which now holds the record for the third-fastest List A century by an Indian.

Although he has been a hero of home cricket, Urvil went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. However, fate had other plans. When Vansh Bedi became injured and unavailable, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) signed Urvil as a mid-season signing, signing him for his base price of ₹30 lakh. Now part of a legendary franchise, he has a golden opportunity to tread the IPL ground and display his talent at the top level.

While CSK continues to rebuild and look for fresh firepower, Urvil Patel comes along with not just statistics but raw potential. It is a classic tale of waiting for things to happen at the right moment. Fans will be on their toes speculating if he will be able to take his home season fireworks to the humongous IPL stage.
